Ashton Cup & Shield Review

Newport D and Highley won their Ashton Cup and Shield comfortably on a cool night at Wrockwardine Wood.

Newport defeated Allscott Heath by 36 chalks with 8 of the 10 winners to win the competition for a third year running. Mick Jones led the way winning 14 at number one, but Laura White’s fine 13 win kept Allscott Heath in the game at just 6 down. But Newport took the whole of the middle four, led by Martin Cotterill’s 10 win, to increase their lead to an unassailable 45 chalks. Fiona Waland did reply for Allscott to win 4, but Neil Smallman’s 13 win meant Newport won by 36.

On the other green it was Highley who beat Much Wenlock by 79 overall. They flew out of the traps with Martin Beddow racing 20-0 up and winning 2 and Lol Russon being 13-0 up and winning 16. Roger Jones won 8 and Chris Smith 6 to put them 51 up after the first four. John Smith added a 7 card with Brian Durnall’s 11 win, but Peter Yates won 13 and Bob Mumford 19 for Wenlock. Phil Pack won 21-11 at number 10 to give them the trophy for the first time.

Ashton Cup & Shield Draw & Preview

The two Ashton competitions come to a climax tonight with the finals taking place against at Wrockwardine Wood.

The Ashton Cup final on the old green at 6.30 p.m. sees Newport D go for a hattrick of titles as they take on Allscott Heath C. Allscott have been enjoying a good season and are currently in 3rd place in Division 4, but some 37 points adrift of Newport D at the top of the table. Newport lead out with Mick Jones, winner of many competitions, including the Monday Night Merit which was won on that green. The team contains many of the players that won it last year including the two Edwards. Allscott have some players with big game experience though, Lee Taylor and Andy Johnson have played in the Junior county before and have recently returned to the game.

The Ashton Shield final at 7 p.m. sees Much Wenlock try to go one better than last year when they lost out to Donnington Wood on the same green. They face South Shropshire rivals Highley this time round, who contain experienced players like Martin Beddow and Phil Pack, Phil playing against Steve Preece which could be the game of the night, especially if the tie is close.

It promises to be a great night, with scores updated here for the Ashton Cup and here for the Ashton Shield.
