The finals of the Ashton Cup & Shield conclude tonight with three teams looking to win the trophy again and one looking to win it for the first time.
Newport D meet Wrockwardine Wood C in the Ashton Cup at 6.30 with both teams having the best record in this competition this century. Newport have won it the last three years, while Wrockwardine Wood won it 6 times in 8 years in the 2010. Both teams are in the top three of the table, sandwiching Allscott Heath in the table with 25 points separating the two teams under the new scoring system. Newport captain Mick Jones knows it will be a close game and has put himself at number 10 to try bring it home like he has done many times before. At the other end of the age spectrum is Rowan Fuller, our former under 15 Merit champion who leads the Wrockwardine Wood team out, possibly the youngest ever number one in a senior cup final! He will play the experienced Dave Oldcorn, with Newport’s Chris Gill hoping to celebrate the birth of his son with triumph in the final, he has Steven Weston at number 2.
The Ashton Shield at 7 sees Sir John Bayley C looking to win their first ever Ashton title, while Sinclair C have won the Shield before in 2013 and 2016. Sinclair are bottom of Division Four, while the Bayley are in 6th place safely in mid table. Another under 18 leads the line, Luke Morris, a former Fletcher Junior Doubles winner, for the Bayley, and takes on Will O’Hara, both players having played the most in Division 2 this season. Logan Church, Under 15 & 18 Merit champion, is at number 6 for Sinclair and plays Paul Lewis. Steve Watkins, runner up to Mick Jones in last year’s Monday Night Merit, is at number 8 for the Bayley and has Emma Millman.
It promises to be a great night of bowls at the Bowring.
There will be limited copies of a free programme available, as well as a raffle.
Dress code applies and scoreboards are in operation.
There will be a Player of the Match award in each final.
There will be a buffet after each final in the big room in the clubhouse.
