Wood Win It

Belated but sincere congratulations from the League go to Wrockwardine Wood, the 2026 winners of the Best Green in Shropshire accolade.

Their No.1 green, the pride and joy of greenkeeper Tony Garmson, took the Dennis UK- SISIS-sponsored title after a marathon day of judging last month.

The judges said: “Like every club we visited this summer, you’ve had to manage through one of the hottest and driest growing seasons on record.

“This year’s judging was therefore about much more than simply how green the grass looked.

“We were looking at sensible management, good decision making and how well each green had coped with exceptionally difficult conditions.

“Your green reminded us of an important lesson – good greens aren’t made during the summer, they’re made during the winter.

Yes, the No.1 green was brown and yes, it was dry but, more importantly, It was uniformly brown.

“It still had excellent grass density. It remained true. It looked healthy beneath the surface and it played exactly as a good bowling green should.

“That doesn’t happen by accident. It’s a reflection of months of sensible management before the dry weather ever arrived.

“The hard work you’ve carried out through previous autumns and winters has built a resilient surface capable of coping with one of the toughest summers we’ve ever experienced.

“Everyone involved should be extremely proud of what you’ve achieved.”

Edgmond, winner of the title the last two years, was third this time.
