The first ever Mid Shropshire Champion of Champions takes place tomorrow at Wrockwardine Wood starting at 10 a.m.
A field of 42 players from 24 of our clubs take part in this prestigious event and will try to get their hands on a brand new and only gold trophy in the league.
There is a quality start to the day with four players kicking off the round of 32 that are more than capable of winning this. Thursday Night Merit winner Stuart Rutter takes on former Senior Merit Champion Paul Beer, while just below sees Under 18 Merit winner Jordon Millman play Under 25 Merit winner Tom Killen.
Other players who will be one of the favourites will include Pete Farmer, winner of the Newport Open last week, and he takes on Paul Rudrum of Albrighton in the prelims. Wayne Rogers, winner of the Wally Amos Memorial this year at Newport, takes on Wrockwardine’s own Flamingo Liam Bremner. Tony Rhodes, a former Shropshire Premier League Merit winner, has Saturday Division Averages winner Dave James. Jamie Pritchard, the only player to win two Mid Shropshire League competitions this season, plays Harry Church, Senior Merit Champion, with the winner taking on an all Sir John Bayley clash between Monday Night Merit winner Steve Watkins and Beginner’s Competition winner Matt Parton. Other prelims include a South Shropshire clash between Jeremy Good of Much Wenlock and John Price of Chelmarsh, Division Three Averages winner Roger Beeston meeting Will Higgs or Broseley and Division Four Averages winner Rich Lewis meeting Donnington Wood’s Mark Williams. The youngest player here, Jacob Wall, winner of the Under 15 Merit, has former twice Senior Merit finalist Kate Wainwright, with the other prelim involving Michael Tranter of Maddocks and Pete Millington from Trench.
The round of 32 has last week’s Newport Open quarter finalist Jon Lea playing Nick Davies, the Meole Brace player having won the Senior Citizens Merit in that Mid Shropshire League. The winner of that will play former Dixon & Driscoll winner Nick Mullinder or League Handicap Consolation winner Lee Walmsley. The Division One and Division Five Averages winners clash as Brian Jarvis meets Mike Briscoe, with the victor taking on Bylet’s Jim Broadhouse or Thursday Afternoon Averages winner Larry Goodridge. Another junior takes part as Tom Clarke of the Bayley meets Horsehay’s Jack Clayton, with another junior and Round Robin winner Logan Church having Allan Smith of Newport first round. Louise Cotton, Ladies Merit winner and a home player on Wrockwardine, meets George Woodfield, the Division Six Averages winner. The other two confirmed ties in the last 32 sees our Chairman Chris Hayward taking on Division Two Averages winner Steve Pessall and Doug Wallace, Charlton Championship of the Green winner, taking on Ian Edwards, who won the Over 60s Merit on Wrockwardine Wood.
