Big & Bold

Another slice of League history has been made as some member clubs aim to deliver the goods over the Big Bowls (Bank Holiday) Weekend.

Allscott Heath and Broseley held their open sessions today – Saturday 24th May – as part of the nationwide drive to encourage more people of all ages to take up the sport.

And tomorrow it’s the turn of  Bylet (2 to 4pm), Bridgnorth (10:30am to 12:30pm), Madeley Cricket Club (12 noon to 4pm) and Wrockwardine Wood (11am to 3pm) to join the party.

Here’s hoping it helps them all boost numbers – but the best way, long term, is for all clubs to have a qualified coach to spearhead recruitment drives.

The deadline for signing up to the coaches course organised by Pauline Wilson at the behest of the League is 31st May and the cost is £150 – but 50% of that is covered by a BCGBA bursary upon completion, the county association give a further £30 and the League has already announced that it too will consider applications for financial assistance from willing volunteers in need of a little extra help.

And as for that slice of League history?

Well it was made last weekend by Roy Bradburn when the St Georges man joined Paul Beer in becoming the only bowlers to win both the Senior and Over-60s Merits.

Roy is PICTURED with the Hutchinson Trophy and runner-up Ian Edwards of Newport after beaing him 21-17 in a tense final on a lightning fast Bowring No.2 green.

And finally, congratulations to Shifnal for doing such a splendid job in hosting the home leg of Shropshire Ladies’ British county championship clash against Greater Manchester at the start of their bid for three titles in a row.
