Ashton Cup & Shield Quarter Finals Preview

The Ashton Cup & Shield is now at the Quarter Finals stage with 8 teams left in both competitions.

The Ashton Cup holders Newport D aim to go another step closer as they take on Sinclair C of Division 5. Horsehay B aim to cause an upset to as they take on Shifnal C of the league above. Allscott Heath E will look to create a bigger upset as the Division 6 side play Sir John Bayley C of Division 4. The final tie sees an all Division 4 clash between Allscott Heath C play St Georges C.

The Ashton Shield sees the holders Donnington Wood B play Sir John Bayley D of Division 6. Runners-up from last season, Much Wenlock B, take on Bowring C, while there is a South Shropshire derby between Bylet B and Highley. The last tie is between two D sides of Donnington Wood and Shifnal.

Players must have played at least four league games in any league to be eligible.

Ashton Shield Preliminary Round Results

The holders Donnington Wood B survived a scare against Hadley USC C in the Preliminary round of the Ashton Shield. They won by just 5 chalks, winning by 24 at home, four players winning 21-14, and losing by just 5 away, best winner there being Gary Gaut 8. The team they beat in the final, Much Wenlock B, defeated St Georges D by 79 shots with all 10 winners. Best winner at home was Peter Iles 21-1 and away was Steve Preece 8. Sir John Bayley D shocked Trench C by 14 chalks as they won by 7 at home, Alan Hayes best winner 11, and by 2 away, best winner there being Thomas Clarke 12.

Thursday Merit Date & Venue

The Thursday Night Merit will take place on Sunday 1st September at Donnington Wood Bowling Club at 10 a.m.

There will be no dress code.

Entry is £10.

There will be £100 sponsorship added to the prize money.

Players must have played at least four Thursday Night games this season to be eligible at the time of the competition.

Harris Shield Preliminary Round Preview

There are two ties in the new Harris Shield competition. Sir John Bayley A take on Horsehay A, Horsehay hoping to bridge the division gap with the aid of a 10 shot handicap. The other tie sees the two Woods collide, Donnington taking on Wrockwardine, with Donnington having a 6 shot advantage.

All players must have played at least one game in any league.

Harris Cup 1st Round Preview

The 1st round of the Harris Cup has taken place or is taking place over the next week or so. Allscott Heath A have already secured their place in the Quarter Finals after beating Sir John Bayley A by 4 chalks. They won by 29 at home led by Rebecca Wedge’s 11 win, and lost by 27 away, Chris Hayward their only winner there 19. Burway and St Georges have played the leg at Burway last night, St Georges winning there by 26 led by Pete Farmer’s 1 win.

Tonight sees the holders Highley face Taylor Support Shropshire Premier League winners Sir John Bayley. Division One Champions Newport aim to upset Premier League side Adderley, while the lowest ranked team in the competition, Worfield A, play Trench A, leaders of Division Two.

Last year’s runners up Bylet start their campaign against Wrockwardine Wood A in a Preliminary round tie, the winners playing Division One leaders Sinclair next week. That date also sees Hadley USC play Madeley CC in an all Division One clash. Wem USC also play in this competition for the first time in a long time and play Shifnal, impressing in Division One this season.
