There are two ties in the new Harris Shield competition. Sir John Bayley A take on Horsehay A, Horsehay hoping to bridge the division gap with the aid of a 10 shot handicap. The other tie sees the two Woods collide, Donnington taking on Wrockwardine, with Donnington having a 6 shot advantage.
All players must have played at least one game in any league.
The 1st round of the Harris Cup has taken place or is taking place over the next week or so. Allscott Heath A have already secured their place in the Quarter Finals after beating Sir John Bayley A by 4 chalks. They won by 29 at home led by Rebecca Wedge’s 11 win, and lost by 27 away, Chris Hayward their only winner there 19. Burway and St Georges have played the leg at Burway last night, St Georges winning there by 26 led by Pete Farmer’s 1 win.
Tonight sees the holders Highley face Taylor Support Shropshire Premier League winners Sir John Bayley. Division One Champions Newport aim to upset Premier League side Adderley, while the lowest ranked team in the competition, Worfield A, play Trench A, leaders of Division Two.
Last year’s runners up Bylet start their campaign against Wrockwardine Wood A in a Preliminary round tie, the winners playing Division One leaders Sinclair next week. That date also sees Hadley USC play Madeley CC in an all Division One clash. Wem USC also play in this competition for the first time in a long time and play Shifnal, impressing in Division One this season.
There are three ties in the Ashton Shield over the next three Wednesdays. Tonight sees the holders Donnington Wood B take on Division 5 Hadley USC. Next week sees last year’s runner up Much Wenlock B play St Georges D of Division 6, and the following Wednesday has Division 5 side Sir John Bayley D try to upset Division 4 side Trench C.
All players must have played at least one league game.
Mick Jones added to his trophy collection with the Monday Night Merit after beating Steve Watkins in the final 21-12. He went 11-3 up on a round peg from the clubhouse corner and Steve couldn’t put more than two scoring ends together to get back at him.
In the Semi Finals Mick defeated Michael Furness 15 in a game where from 6-1 to Mick neither player scored in more than two ends together. The other Semi Final was the best game of the night between Steve and Abi Helliwell. Abi took an early 9-4 lead but Steve got back to 12-10 down. He then went 17-12 ahead in the corners and then 19-13. But Abi wasn’t done and got back to 19-18 but Steve got the two he needed.
In the Quarter Finals, Steve raced 14-0 up on Des Conneely before winning 5, while Abi also had a fast start to go 12-1 up and won 5 against Eric Reynolds. Mick had a slow start to be 6-1 down against Stuart James but then went 14-6 up over the middle and won 12. The closest game was between Michael and Stefan Whitehouse. Stefan was 14-9 up before Michael got back to lead 19-14 and won 15.

Due to England playing on Wednesday at 8 p.m. clubs can move their games on the 10th July to be played earlier that night or anytime before Thursday 25th July in time for the Harris Shield 1st Round on Wednesday 31st July.
Both clubs must agree and the Competition Secretary Rob Burroughs must be informed of the new date.
