Sir John Bayley A edged past Wrockwardine Wood A by just 5 chalks in the closest game in the Quarter Finals of the Harris Shield. They won by 39 at home with 5 winners, Del McKenzie and Pat Minton best winners 8, and by 36 away with no winners. Newport A beat Hadley USC A by 59 shots, having all 5 winners at home to win by 65, Martyn France best winner 3. Away they had 3 winners but lost by one, Simon Oldcorn best winner 12. Shifnal had the biggest win of the night by 97 against Division Two Charlton. They won by 66 at home, best winners being Rob Steventon and Dan Wilson 6, while away they won by 51, Darrell Handley best winner 5. Bowring A beat the other Division Two team in the competition, Shifnal B, by 46 overall. Sinclair shocked Premier League Adderley to remain the only team from the Mid Shropshire League in the competition. They narrowly lost both legs but progressed with the handicap. They lost by 2 at home, Jordan Millman best winner 13, and lost by 5 away, Dan Williams best winner 6. Sir John Bayley defeated Madeley CC by 37, winning by 60 at home, best winners Scott Simpson and Alex Jones 4, and by 14 away, Scott Harries best winner 5. Thursday Night Merit Entries Needed

The Thursday Night Merit will take place on Sunday 1st September at Donnington Wood Bowling Club at 10 a.m.

There will be no dress code.

Entry is £10.

There will be £100 sponsorship added to the prize money.

Players must have played at least four Thursday Night games this season to be eligible at the time of the competition.

Ashton Cup & Shield Semi Finals Preview

The Ashton Cup & Shield is at the Semi Final stage as eight teams look to make their respective finals. The Ashton Cup holders Newport D aim for a third successive final since the competition resumed after COVID, and play Shifnal C of Division 4. The other Semi sees Allscott Heath C play Allscott Heath E, with the E side having a 26 shot advantage.

The Ashton Shield has a rematch of last year’s final between Donnington Wood B and Much Wenlock B, with Donnington having won that game comfortably. Their C team will be hoping to make the final as well but will have to upset Highley if they are to do so, this game taking the place on Wednesday 28th August.

A reminder that all players must have played 6 games in any league.

Ashton Shield Quarter Final Report

The holders Donnington Wood B are still on course to defend their title as they beat Sir John Bayley D by 37 chalks. They won by 58 at home, best winner Darrin Marsh 7, and lost by 6 away, Kevin Emlyn best winner 11. Their C team also got through after getting past Shifnal D by 55, winning by 20 at home with Keane Sutherland best winner 10, and by 31 away, best winner Phil Atkins 5. Highley won the South Shropshire battle by 7 against the Bylet. They won by 4 at home, best winner Mac Russon 14, and by 12 away, Roger Jones best winner 10. The other tie saw Much Wenlock B progress as they look to go one better than last season. They beat Bowring C by 24, winning by 39 at home, Alex Rigby best winner 3, and losing by 23 away, Steve Preece best winner there 13.

The holders Newport D survived a scare to reach the Semi Finals of the Ashton Cup. They edged past Sinclair by 2, winning by 22 at home, best winner being Kevin Edwards 8, and losing by 5 away, Martin Cotterill best winner there 14. They will take on Shifnal C next round who beat Horsehay B by 7. They won by 23 at home, Phil Guy best winner 8, and lost by 11 away, their only winner there being Christopher Williams 11. The two Allscott Heath teams will meet in the other Semi Final after the C team defeated St Georges C by 24 and the E team beat Sir John Bayley C by just one! The C team won by 51 at home, Jamie Phillips best winner 3, and lost by 32 away, Dave Kilford their only winner there 15. The E team lost by 23 at home, Rob Sutherland and Alan Hughes best winners 18, and by 5 away, Chris Taylor best of two winners there 12.

Harris Cup Quarter Finals Preview

The Harris Cup final has reached its Quarter Final stage with four Mid Shropshire clubs looking to upset their Premier League opponents. Premier League leaders Sir John Bayley take on Madeley CC, Madeley having a lead of 37 over them. St Georges take on Division Two leaders Trench with a 36 shot handicap, this game taking place on the 21st August. Adderley and Wem USC first foray into the competition may mean a Semi Final place if they can overcome Division One leaders Sinclair and Allscott Heath respectively.

Harris Cup 1st Round Review

The 1st round of the Harris Cup is now complete. Premier League leaders Sir John Bayley edged past the holders Highley by 15 chalks, winning by 19 at home, best winner Spencer Clarke 13, and by 5 away, Chris Worthington their best there 6. Bylet’s Premier side though lost out to Sinclair by 76, losing by 40 at home, Dan Williams best winner 5, and by 17 away, Will O’Hara best winner 11. Adderley defeated Newport A by 24, winning by 23 at home, best winner Chris Stretch 12 and by 17 away, Tom Killen best 21-9. Wem USC also got through by just 5 chalks against Shifnal A. They won by 32 at home, Colin Smith and Darren Fitzpatrick best winner 10, and lost by 9 away, Gareth Davies best winner 9. St Georges’ Premier side got through after winning at Burway by 26, Pete Farmer best winner 1, and then Burway withdrawing from their away leg.

Trench A are the only Division Two side surviving after beating Worfield by 50. They won by 42 at home, John McGill best winner 6, and by 26 away, Pete Millington best winner 1. Allscott Heath A defeated Sir John Bayley A by just 4 chalks, winning by 29 at home, Rebecca Wedge best 11, and losing by 27 away, Chris Hayward their only winner there 19. Madeley CC shocked high flyers Hadley USC by40. They won by 20 at Hadley, Jamie Millman best winner 11, and by 16 at home, Ian Evans best 21-9.
