The League’s veterans are in seventh heaven after landing Mid Shropshire’s 2nd Shropshire inter-league triumph in the space of 6 days.
Captained by Ian Evans, the vets followed up the success of the League’s juniors at Old Shrewsbury by winning the over-60s crown on Saturday for a record 7th time.
In a competition played at 3 separate venues, Mid Shropshire’s victory came at the Sir John Bayley Club where they beat the Blue team from the host Shropshire Premier League in the 6-a-side final that actually finished with the aggregate scores tied on 115 chalks apiece.
Organiser Rob Burroughs explained: “Mid Shropshire’s A team defeated the Premier League Blue side by 20 – after the 20 shot handicap had been applied.
“They were comfortable with the added cushion (of the handicap), Roy Bradburn winning 21-16 to put them 22 ahead after Dave Brown got back to 19 against Julian Cooke from 14-8 behind and Dave Price got 20 off Dave Redge.
“The Premier League never threatened to get back into it after Ian Evans won 21-15 for Mid Shropshire, despite Mark Thomas and Rob Renke winning for the Blues.
In the semi-finals on the same bottom green at the Bayley, Mid Shropshire A beat Tanners Shropshire Ladies by 39 with 5 winners led by Dave Price’s 21-9 card.
Round robin matches earlier in the day to cater for an impressive 13 entries were played on both greens at Meole Brace and Shrewsbury before the 4 group winners travelled over to Wellington.
The closest group was on Castlefields No.1 with a Wendy Jones-inspired Tanners Shropshire Ladies getting through by 8 shots on aggregate after beating Mid Shropshire B by 18 and then losing to North Shropshire Vets C by seven.
David Evans’s B team had done well to beat North Shropshire C by 21 with 5 winners – but finishing plus 3 was not quite enough.
